“Forget what you think you know, most of it is wrong anyway.”
That's one of the best pieces of advice I've heard or been given. Like most people, I believed that vampires were a figment of imagination, and existed only in the mind of authors, TV scriptwriters, and movie makers. I know differently now, and my eyes have been opened to a world the “normals” don't know about.
The obvious question is: How did I become a vampire?
That story begins on September 4, 1998, when my view of reality changed forever.
I was a graduate student at UCLA, and I had ridden my motorcycle (a Harley, of course) down to Hollywood Boulevard that Friday night just to take in the sights and sounds of the famous street. I passed by the mouth of an alley, and a pair of strong hands pulled me into the darker shadows between two buildings. I fought and did everything I could to escape, but it was futile. My attackers were vastly stronger, and I soon felt two sharp jolts of pain as a pair of fangs entered my neck. My consciousness faded with every passing moment. The fangs were eventually withdrawn, and a bloody wrist was pressed to my mouth. As I hovered somewhere between life and death, someone whispered in my ear the following: "Drink my young one. I have been watching you, and I have chosen you." As I was in a weakened state both physically and mentally from the blood-loss, I followed that command without any resistance.
Most of what happened immediately after that is one big blur, and I still don't remember much from that night. What I will say is that it's been an interesting ride. Part of the reason is my sire, whoever they were, decided to turn me and then left me. Maybe they wanted to see how I'd do on my own. All things considered, I think I've done well. I've never been angst-ridden about being turned. I simply didn't have time for that nonsense back then, and I still don't. I had to adapt, and I did – no choice. If you're wondering, I prefer fresh human blood straight from the source, and I did go through a phase where I killed people indiscriminately. Now? I don't always kill, but I'm not above it either.
Of course, I've seen plenty of vampire movies, and I thought that a fiery end thanks to the sun was a given (too many Hammer movies) - that or a stake. Then again, it was the movies, particularly 1922's release of Nosferatu, which introduced the idea that sunlight = death, and authors and movie makers ran with the idea. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a complete day-walker with full immunity. With that said, don't expect me to go up like a roman candle on the 4th of July - my ashes scattering on the slightest breeze. That's simply the magic of a special effects team. What I can say is it took me a few days to figure out that prolonged exposure to direct sunlight will slowly sap my strength and leave me slightly lethargic. In addition, I'll grow hungry sooner than usual. Also, my eyes are more photosensitive, which is why I generally prefer to sleep during the day, but not in a coffin. That's just a stereotype.
Being a native Californian, there are times when you might catch me out on a night where the light of the moon is reflected on the ocean's waves. Becoming a vampire may have changed a lot of things, but I still love to surf.
Contrary to some popular portrayals, vampires don't always hang out in tapestry-lined castles, a glass of blood in hand, dressed in the most expensive tailored suits or something out of some prior century. That scene was never mine, and I prefer jeans and a t-shirt along with my leather jacket.
Marius had carefully packed the box with a blonde wig, a blue and yellow cheerleading outfit, a stake, high heeled shoes and a box of coffee....and anote
The note read:
We got to talking about you vamps over drinks and coffee the other day and we decided you guys aren't so bad after all so we put together a little gift package for you. Pleace find enclosed clothing and coffee.
Her giggled slightly. He had recently fed from thr strong scent of blood coming from the man. She raised her chin in a defiant manner.
"Perhaps you do not bleed but that still doesnt speak of your taste"
Her eyes opened wide. Blood. New blood. Blood she hadnt tasted. She so needed a taste. Craved it. She moved slowly through this land that she once roamed dominately. Seeking her pray. Slowly she moved to him. Yes this one would do. Nicole moved behind him and inhaled his essence.
"You look mighty tasty darlin"
She moistened her lower lip with her tongue slowly
Scarlet bows at the warrior who delivered her the head she bountied."Thank you sir you did the realm a great honor in catching this vermin. Here is the reward that was offered." Scarlett hands him his reward and smiles as she takes the platter and tosses the head in an open fire."I know you will be back you always come back."
*Penelope wanders around the Realm making sure she goes to each person that was awake at this time. She had a job to do that her life depended on.* "Good evening. My name is Penelope Snufflepuff and I am here to let you know that Zeddicus Zorander is the best elder ever."
He had not seen the vampire in what seemed a very long time. The Realm wasn't exactly the biggest place on Earth for the Immortal, and word had gotten around quick about his friend's growth in strength as well as his taking on the golden robes. Setting out to find this vampire, the Archangel finally found his thunderous blue eyes to catch those of an old friend.
Approaching him, the Immortal would nod his head with a sincere smile upon his face as he spoke.
"Congratulations, Severian, on your those golden robes as well as your growth in strength. Definitely well deserved my friend."
The doors were opened and Madilyn glanced about seeing who let her go so early. Then her gaze fell upon a blonde haired male who was holding the door open. The Toreador smiled as she bat her long dark lashes as she cooed "Thank you, Sir."
Shannon smiled at the masculine voice that greeted her to the Realm. The corners of her lips turned into a sweet smile, her dark eyes shining at the figure before her. "Why thank you very much" Her eyes following him as he again disappeared into the shadows.
The longer Wes stood near this man the more normal he appeared. As he bathed in the emotions of the man named Severian his rigid stance loosened and his face became more kind, but when he spoke his voice was still oddly cold. “I have many questions, most I sincerely doubt you’d have any chance of answering with any veracity. I do appreciate the offer though.”
Not ten paces from his last strange greeting Wesley was stopped once more by an anonymous voice speaking to him. This one was male, but his reaction to it was the same as the last. He looked to the source of the voice and saw the man appear from the shadows. No look of shock crossed his face, he remained as impassive as always until he felt the mans emotions. At that point he only smiled crookedly and said, “Thank you.”
After the greeting Wes just stood there looking at the man, his sunglasses reflecting the mans face, but he said nothing more.
Nicolette let her carnelian orbs drink in the visage of the man before her, something oddly familiar about him. She could not place a name to his face but she was certain she had seen him on occasion during her previous wandering in the Realm some time ago. A curious look settled over her face as she spoke to him, her voice in a hushed tone, but filled with an unknown warmth. "Thank You kind Sir. It is good to be back in the Realm once more."
Mona had heard that it was a covenmate's birthday, and when she learned to whom the celebration belonged, she had to ponder what might be a good way to celebrate for the hooligan. She sat at her desk flipping through page after page of magazine pictures meant to sell party products for what seemed like hours. The man was a vampire, so what would make for a good gift anyways?
Casting that book aside, she picked up yet another booklet. A touch of her tongue to the tip of her manicured finger, and again she began the page flipping. Suddenly her entire being perked up, her emerald hued eyes visibly lightened in her excitement. The store was local, even better. She picked up her cell phone, dialed the number, and placed the order. Within two hours time, the carrier had arrived with exactly what she had been looking for.
She left her room at the covenhouse, and headed down the hall. Mona snuck into the vampire's room, and made quick work of her plan. She had to stand on tip toes to reach, but the effect would be well worth the effort. After placing the basket on a tabletop, she slipped back out the door, and waited around the nearest corner.
When Severian would open his door, he would be bombarded with a spray of red glitter. If he further opened the door, the balloons would float out of the room. Inscribed on each would be the word "Twilight" and beneath, written in silver glitter gel pen, "See, now vampires can sparkle!". If he were to make it as far as the basket, he could find an assortment of vampire treats: wax fangs, gummy bats, and a bottle of blood wine. The card affixed to the basket simply saying "Happy Birthday Bloodsucker! Always, Mona Marie"
*The little redheaded girl was looking for a bit of mischief as she walked about the streets at this time. A glimmer in her bright emrald eyes, she lurked through alleyways and hid behind various items to avoid being seen. Her baby skunk, Sunshine, was close behind her even as she ran along. Seeing a man not to far away, she walked up behind him and poked his thigh before grinning.*
"Heya mister. Guess what?"
*The little girl giggled softly before poking him once again, this time a bit harder. Her giggles grew louder as she took off running. Sunshine waddled behind her doing his best to keep up.*
Canter her head slightly to a angle as her lips curled into a soft smile. "Thank you Severian. I appreciate the kind thoughts." He had inquired something within the realm to her and meant to get back with him.
Mackenzie felt poorly about the previous night, and bad for this individual. Wrong place, wrong time. It had happened to herself many times before. As promised, she dialed the second number on the slip of paper and waited as the sound of ringing met her ears followed by voicemail. Without hesitation, she left him a message. "Sev. Hello. It's Mackenzie I was calling to make the plans we had spoken about. Obviously... I was thinking sometime tomorrow perhaps? In the early evening? Let me know." Hanging up her phone quickly, she rolled her eyes at herself. Sometimes she just sounded ridiculous, and she knew it.
*Walking up to you with a friendly smile.* "Hello, I am Crystal. May I welcome you to the Relm?" *I reach out my hand in greetings.* "I am from the Coven of Shadows and Light. If you need help, call upon me."
